New Delhi. Lt Gen. Hans Otto Budde, Chief of the German Army was in
New Delhi on an official visit to India from 18-24 May. His visit
marked the upswing in the bilateral defence relations, which are at an all time
high now. According to an official statement, India’s Army-to-Army cooperation
with Germany is progressing smoothly and covers joint activities like visits,
participation as observers in exercises, training, exchange of experts and study
tours. Both India and Germany have contributed significantly to various UN missions
and have a lot to share from each other’s experiences. India and Germany
signed a Defence Cooperation Agreement in 2006 and form ed High Committee (and
its sub groups) on Defence Cooperation. Since then, regular visits at the highest
military levels have taken place. The German Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief
of Air Staff visited India in Dec 2006 and Nov 2007 respectively. During
his visit, the German Army Chief interacted with senior military and civilian
defence officers, and discussed defence-related issues and prospects for future
cooperation between the two Armies. With common concern on increased terrorism
in the world, discussions on global and regional security situation including
enhanced cooperation in combating terrorism were also held. India shares
warm and cordial relations with Germany that have been strengthened over the years
by regular exchange of visits and institutionalization of formal dialogue mechanisms.
Both India and Germany are amongst the fastest growing economies in the world
and Germany is India’s leading trading partner in EU. It supports India in various
international forums like UNSC, NSG etc. and is keen to build a vibrant strategic
partnership. |
