New Delhi. India successfully tested its 700-km range nuclear capable indigenous Shourya (Valour) Missile Sep 24.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which has been working on a variety of missiles for the Indian armed forces, announced that the missile was launched from a conducted from a canister in a ground launch mode and that the firing was “text book perfect.”

The test was conducted at the Interim Test Range in Orissa in the Bay of Bengal, where it hit a predefined target.

DRDO Spokesman Ravi Gupta said that all the Radar Stations, Telemetry Stations, Electro-Optical Stations along the East Coast tracked and monitored all the mission parameters. So did some ships located near the target to witness the final event.

The Missile reached the target “within few meters accuracy,” he said.

The Shourya Missile is equipped with multiple advanced computing systems, very high accuracy navigation and guidance systems.

DRDO Chief Controller Avinash Chander congratulated all the scientists and employees of DRDO and other establishments.

Director DRDL P Venugoplalan, Director ITR SP Dash, Director SPIC Satish Kumar and Programme Director AK Chakravarti monitored all the preparatory operations. Project Director A Joseph and his team prepared the missile and conducted the launch flawlessly.

The missile, which is meant to give the Indian Army a credible second-strike capability, was first tested from the same defence base 12 Nov 2008.

The developmental flight trial of the missile system is a part of the ongoing technology development work undertaken by the country's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The missile has a unique feature of simplicity of operation and maintenance. It can be easily handled, transported and stored within the canister for longer shelf life.

The high manoeuvrability of the missile makes it less vulnerable to available anti-missile defence systems, sources said.
