New Delhi. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory B. Jaczko will lead a five-member delegation to India to exchange information and share experience on safety standards and regulation for the safe operation of nuclear power plants.

The delegation would visit New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai Nov 14-18 to take part in meetings with the Indian Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), other Government of India agencies, and visit a variety of nuclear facilities.

According to a US Embassy statement here, the NRC delegation will visit the nuclear power plants in Tarapur (Tarapur Atomic Power Station) and Chennai (Madras Atomic Power Station), and laboratories at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in Chennai. While there, Mr Jaczko will meet with appropriate Indian Government officials, and staff of nuclear agencies and organizations.

“I look forward to the continuation and advancement of our long-term relationships with our AERB Indian counterparts and with other Indian organizations in the area of nuclear safety,” said Chairman Jaczko.

Prior to the Chairman’s visit, a nine-member technical delegation from NRC (including two from the Chairman’s group) will travel to New Delhi to participate in the 21st International Conference on Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (SMiRT) being held Nov 6-11. This would be followed by post-conference seminars in Mumbai and Tamil Nadu on Nov. 14-15 on topics that include advances in seismic design of structures, innovative fast reactor design, and high temperature design reactors.

The 21st SMiRT will be dedicated to the art, science and practice of nuclear structural mechanics.

It will feature seminars on the mechanics of materials; fracture mechanics and structural integrity; design and construction issues; safety, reliability, risk and margins; issues related to reactor operations, inspection, and maintenance; fuel cycle facilities, waste management, and decommissioning; and the challenges of new reactors.
