Bangalore. The US based diversified technology and manufacturing company, Honeywell International, opened its new US$ 50-million research, development and engineering facility at Bangalore on May 5th.

Inaugurated by Honeywell International’s Chairman and CEO David M Cote, this is Honeywell’s second research and development centre in Bangalore. It would accommodate 3,000 people.

Mr Cote drove home the point that India has played a key role in giving a forward thrust to the activities of Honeywell.

“India is an integral part of Honeywell’s global growth strategy. We are committed to India as a manufacturing location, export hub and most importantly as a centre of engineering and R&D excellence. Our presence here has grown from 1,000 employees in 2000 to more than 10,000 today. Honeywell has five manufacturing facilities and more than 20 other locations across the country with employees in 50 cities. We look forward to continuing our growth in India and building our capabilities here,” noted Cote.

Mr Cote pointed out that overall, the four thrust areas of Honeywell are aerospace, automation and control solutions, speciality materials and turbo chargers.

Honeywell expected a revenue from its India operations to be around US$ 600-million during 2009.

He said he did not support protectionism. Job creation is not a zero sum game, he said adding: “I get worried when I hear bout protectionism. It is certainly worrisome and harmful. It would cause people to believe in things that would be harmful in the long run. I am a big fan of creating jobs everywhere.”

Honeywell has a long standing association with India’s state owned defense and aerospace major HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd). It has a collaborative arrangement with HAL to produce TPE 331 aircraft engine. In addition, the company is keen on supporting a programme to reengine the deep strike penetration combat aircraft Jaguar in service with the Indian Air Force (IAF). Honeywell has offered its F125IN turbofan engine to give the aircraft more thrust and weight carrying capability.
