He will succeed Lt Gen Babacar Gaye of Senegal,
whose effective leadership of the Missions
military component has allowed MONUC/MONUSCO to
make important progress towards the return of
peace and security in the Democratic Republic
of Congo, a UN statement said.
Lt Gen Prakash, who is currently in charge of
Indias United Nations peacekeeping operations
at the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi, has served
his country during a distinguished military career
spanning some 37 years. He trained at Indias
National Defence and Military Academies prior
to being commissioned into the Artillery branch
of the Indian Armed forces in 1973. He subsequently
held a series of military positions of increasing
seniority, including as Indias Defence Attaché
in Paris for three years, and as Senior Sector
Operations Officer in the United Nations Iran-Iraq
Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG).
Born in 1953, Lieutenant-General Prakash is married
and has two daughters.
