Indrajaal, Sigma secure ₹155-crore orders for mobile anti-drone patrol vehicle

Hyderabad, August 17. Indian defence technology companies Indrajaal Autonomous Defence Systems and Sigma Advanced Systems have announced orders worth around ₹155 crore ($16.2 million) for the deployment of the Indrajaal Ranger, a mobile anti-drone system designed to detect, track, identify and counter rogue drones while on the move.

The companies said the orders include a ₹145-crore contract awarded to the Indrajaal-Sigma consortium for deployment in border-security operations and a separate order of approximately ₹10 crore from an urban police agency for VVIP protection and city security.

The deployments mark the emergence of what the companies describe as a new category of homeland-security equipment – the anti-drone patrol vehicle – designed to provide mobile protection against low-altitude aerial threats.

Unlike conventional counter-drone systems that are typically installed at fixed military or strategic sites, the Ranger is designed to operate while travelling at high speeds. This allows security agencies to deploy counter-UAS capabilities along borders, VVIP routes, public events, airports and critical infrastructure.

The companies said the system is intended to address the increasingly mobile nature of drone threats, including the use of unmanned aircraft for cross-border smuggling, surveillance and attacks.

Built around the SkyOS platform, the Ranger combines sensors, artificial intelligence, sensor fusion, command-and-control capabilities and multiple countermeasures. Its protection architecture includes three systems: Retractor, which is designed to take control of rogue drones for recovery and analysis; Lakshman Rekha, which establishes a virtual protective perimeter; and Net Interceptor, which physically captures hostile drones when electronic countermeasures are inadequate.

According to the companies, the Ranger has undergone government evaluations and has been selected by the Ministry of Home Affairs for deployment in sensitive security environments.

Indrajaal founder and CEO Kiran Raju Penumacha said the growing use of drones in conflicts has highlighted a wider security challenge, with borders, airports, cities, public gatherings, critical infrastructure and VVIP movements increasingly requiring protection from low-altitude aerial threats.

Sigma Advanced Systems CEO Sunil Kalidindi said the programme demonstrated the ability of India’s defence manufacturing sector to develop and produce advanced indigenous technologies at operational scale.

The companies said the orders also reflect a wider international shift towards integrating counter-drone systems into routine homeland-security operations rather than limiting them to military applications.

They positioned the Ranger’s deployment as part of India’s push for self-reliance in defence technology, highlighting the role of domestic private-sector companies in developing and manufacturing systems for emerging national-security requirements.
