Delivering an advanced services solution for Advanced Air Mobility

UK, July 21. 2021 was a milestone year for the future of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), with investment of $7 bn in this exciting market. It is predicted that up to 15,000 eVTOLs could be in the air by 2035.

Rolls-Royce is aiming to become the leading provider of all-electric and hybrid-electric power and propulsion systems for AAM. Existing and new manufacturers, airframers and other aerospace leaders are entering this market, and many are focused on the aircraft that could transform the way we travel, but in order to be a success, we need to build on this innovation and look beyond the aircraft.

At Rolls-Royce, we are reviewing the whole market solution including infrastructure, regulation, and services that can enable our customers to offer mobility solutions.

The business of mobility

For over a century, Rolls-Royce’s strategy has been pioneering the power that matters.

We are now drawing on that knowledge, expertise and experience of our different businesses and applying that to the Advanced Air Mobility market. We have a long history of designing and delivering world-class services across multiple applications – all of which support our vision of a value-driven Advanced Air Mobility ecosystem.

Intelligent power

In a relatively new and unknown market, information is key. By harnessing large pools of data and carving out the information that matters to provide monitoring and insights across our portfolio of services and assets, we can ensure maximum efficiency of operation and deliver business gains, continuously. We’ve been doing it for years.

Our electrical equipment health and monitoring system (E2HM), for example, transmits data from the aircraft around the use of our equipment and can identify the maintenance and services that need to be scheduled. Providing this kind of intelligence in advance enables efficiencies throughout the ecosystem and can deliver real-time value for our partners in a high-volume marketplace.

Collaboration

Our global world-class electrical engineering team are working with leaders in the AAM industry. These collaborations not only help us to expand our understanding of regional challenges and requirements but give us access to the expertise needed to accelerate the deployment of AAM. By building on those capabilities, it will help ensure that we will deliver an advanced services solution to this new market. This will include offerings from fast-charging systems to the introduction of used aircraft batteries into second and third life applications.

The big picture of tomorrow

We are committed across the sectors we operate within to advance sustainable solutions and we are working with customers, industry partners, regulatory authorities, and governments to do this. Through this wide response and by advancing the technology including the development of all-electrical and hybrid-electric aviation propulsion systems and the services to maintain them, we can accelerate the technological breakthroughs that could help deliver net zero carbon by 2050.
