Thai Airways Orders GEnx-1B Engines for Boeing 787 Fleet Expansion

SINGAPORE. GE Aerospace on February 20, announced an order from Thai Airways for GEnx-1B engines to power their new order of 45 Boeing 787 aircraft. The selection anchors the GEnx engine as a cornerstone of the airline’s long-term plan to open new markets and meet surging air travel demand while meeting its environmental commitments.

Boeing and Thai Airways announced today the flagship carrier placed an order for 45 787 Dreamliners as the airline looks to modernize and grow its widebody fleet and international network.

“We are very pleased to welcome Thai Airways to the GEnx family as they expand their Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet and embark on a major fleet expansion plan,” said Russell Stokes, President and CEO, Commercial Engines and Services, GE Aerospace. “The GEnx engine’s advanced technology will play an instrumental role in reducing emissions and helping meet the airline’s and nation’s environmental goals.”

The GEnx engine family has more than 52 million flight hours since entry into service in 2011 and is the fastest-selling, high-thrust engine in GE history with nearly 3,000 engines in service and on backlog, including spares.

“To accomplish the company’s carbon neutral goals by 2050, the 45 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners will be equipped with GEnx engines which are known for their cutting-edge technology and reduced environmental impact. Furthermore, we are confident that the acquisition of the 787 Dreamliners will ultimately benefit our customers and support the growth of our country’s economy,” said Chai Eamsiri, Thai Airways CEO.

The GEnx-1B powers two out of every three 787 aircraft in service. The engine also provides a 1.4% fuel burn savings for the typical 787 mission compared to its competition. Like all GE Aerospace engines, the GEnx can operate on approved Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends today.

Representing a giant leap forward in propulsion technology, GEnx uses lightweight durable materials and advanced design processes to reduce weight, improve performance, and lower maintenance, making it the best engine choice for long-haul flights.

Thai Airways currently operates a fleet with Boeing 777s powered by GE Aerospace’s GE90 engine.
