Defence Correspondents Course – 2024 Commences at Karwar Naval Base

Karvar, August 20. The 2024 edition of Defence Correspondents Course (DCC), a three weeks course conducted by the Ministry of Defence for select journalists from regional and national media houses, commenced at Karwar Naval Base on 19 August, 2024. The Flag Officer Commanding Karnataka Naval Area welcomed the 34 participants of the course on behalf of the Western Naval Command. The ADG (M&C), DPR MoD delivered the inaugural address for the course. The aim of DCC is to build a pool of journalists at all levels who understand the Armed Forces and are cognizant of the domain when reporting on stories relating to the land, air or the maritime environment.

Vice Adm Sanjay J Singh, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Naval Command, also interacted with the DCC participants and gave them an overview on understanding the maritime domain and answered various queries by the young journalists about the Indian Navy.

During the one week naval attachment, the participants will be addressed by subject matter experts from within the Navy and the Coast Guard. They will acquaint the journalists with various aspects of the Navy including naval operations, naval diplomacy, maritime history, Aatmanirbharta in Navy,  Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and the organisational structure of the Navy and Coast Guard. The participants will also visit Indian Navy and Coast Guard ships, submarine and various facilities at Karwar Naval Base. A visit to INS Hansa and various air squadrons at the naval aviation base in Goa is also scheduled during the course.

A sea sortie onboard front line warships of the Indian Navy is the highlight of the naval leg of the course, which will provide the journalists an insight into naval operations at sea. Following the naval leg, the participants will undergo a week long attachment each with the IAF and Indian Army.
