This will be PM Modi’s second visit to Russia this year- he visited Moscow for a bilateral Summit on July 8-9. During his visit to Kazan, Russia, next week, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from BRICS member Countries and leaders invited to the Summit.

While PM Modi is going to have a bilateral meeting with Russia President Vladimir Putin, all eyes are on a possible bilateral meeting between Modi and Xi, on the sidelines of the Summit.

The 16th BRICS Summit, held in Kazan, is being held under the chairmanship of Russia.

The theme of the Summit” Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security”,  will provide an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues.

The Summit will also provide an opportunity to assess the progress of initiatives launched by BRICS and to identify potential areas for future collaborations.

BRICS is an important grouping bringing together the major emerging economies from the world, comprising 41 percent of the world’s population, having 24 percent of the world’s GDP and over 16 percent share in the world trade.

The combined share of GDP of the Countries of the BRICS grouping exceeds USD 60 trillion, which is more than the corresponding figure of the Countries of the G7 and it continues to grow.

Ahead of the Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin, told the BRICS Business Forum on Friday, 18th October, that the BRICS group will generate most of the global economic growth in the coming years. Thanks to its size and relatively fast growth compared to that of developed western nations, he said.

The Countries that are part of the BRICS are in fact the drivers of global economic growth, Putin said and stated that in 2023 BRICS accounted for 37.4 percent, while that of G7 was 29.3 percent.

The Russian President stressed that the joint work of BRICS to accelerate Socio-economic growth and ensure Sustainable development brings tangible results, and actually contributes to improving the well-being and quality of life of the ordinary citizens of the Countries, he added.

Based on the results of the current year, the average rate of economic growth in BRICS is projected at 4 percent, while that of G7 Countries is only 1.7 percent and the global growth is projected at 3.2 percent, Putin stated.

PM Modi’s visit to the Summit is seen crucial on various fronts. Earlier in September this year, the Russian President extended an invitation to PM Modi, proposing a bilateral meeting on October 22, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, during which he also referred to PM Modi as  a “Good Friend.”

The remarks by Putin came while he met India’ s National Security Advisor(NSA) Ajit Doval, on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers Meeting at St. Petersburg.

The invitation read “ We will be expecting Mr Modi in Kazan. I also suggest holding a bilateral meeting on October 22 in order to close the books on our joint work in implementing the agreements made during his (PM Modi) visit to Moscow and outline some prospects for the near future.”

“Please extend my Warmest regards and best wishes to Mr Modi, My good friend,” the Statement read.
