CEASEFIRE!
New Delhi, May 10. In a development that brings a temporary halt to nearly three weeks of high-stakes military escalation, India and Pakistan declared a ceasefire on May 10, 2025, following a sustained exchange of fire, drone attacks, and retaliatory precision strikes under India’s Operation Sindoor.
Triggered by the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which New Delhi attributed to Pakistan-based groups, the crisis rapidly escalated across the Line of Control and western border zones. The ceasefire, though fragile, reflects a mutual recognition of the costs of escalation in an increasingly volatile South Asian security landscape.
In a short briefing to the media here on Saturday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan spoke at 3:30 pm and agreed to stop all military activities from 5 pm India time onwards.
“It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time today, Misri said. “Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to the understanding. The Director Generals of Military Operations will talk again on the 12th of May at 1200 hours.”
Misri’s statement came soon after US President Donald Trump announced on his X handle that Washington has worked out a ceasefire between New Delhi and Islamabad.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire,” Trump stated. “Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister too posted on his X handle that Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect.
“Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!” he stated.
Soon after, during a media briefing by the Ministry of Defence, Commodore Raghu R Nair stated that the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy have been instructed to adhere to this understanding.
“Since the tragic events in Pahalgam, our response has been measured and very responsible,” Commodore Nair said.
He also said that significant amount of misinformation being spread by Pakistan.
“Several attempts were made by Pakistan on spreading of misinformation campaign as we have seen over the last few days,” Wing Commander Vyomika Singh said during the media briefing. “There were attempts made to say that our S-400 air defence base was destroyed. This is completely false and that it was destroyed by a JF-17 aircraft is completely false information.”
Wing Commander Singh also said that the information about the Brahmos missile base being destroyed is false.
“The destruction of airfields at Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Bhuj, Daliya etc. was also a false claim,” she asserted. “The forward ammunition dump at Chandigarh and Beas are also fit and fine.”
She also dismissed allegations made by the Pakistan government that the Indian armed forces targeted mosques.
“Let us make this very clear here that India is a secular nation,” Wing Commander Singh said. “The Indian armed forces are a reflection of our constitutional values. We hold every place of worship of all faiths in the highest regard. Our operations have been aimed exclusively at terrorist camps and facilities being used for anti-India activities.”
She said that in the last few days, Pakistan has suffered losses in both land and air, including damages in crucial Pakistani airbases like Skardu, Sargodha, Jacobabad and Bholari.
The announcement of the ceasefire came after the government decided on Saturday that India will treat any future act of terror on its soil as an “act of war” and respond accordingly.
