IndiGo places order for 30 more Airbus A350 aircraft
New Delhi, June 2. IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, has taken a major step forward in its international expansion strategy by converting purchase rights for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft into a firm order. The agreement was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airbus, the airline announced on June 1.
This move forms part of IndiGo’s broader plan to build a wide-body fleet for long-haul operations. Speaking at a media briefing in the national capital, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said, “We are placing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s.” The order is a conversion from the 70 purchase rights included in the airline’s earlier deal signed last year.
Deliveries of these wide-body jets are scheduled to begin in 2027. Powered by Rolls Royce’s advanced Trent XWB engines, the A350-900s will give IndiGo greater operational range and flexibility as it eyes new long-haul international destinations.
Elbers added that the airline remains on track with its rapid growth plans, continuing to add approximately one aircraft per week to its fleet, aiming to double its size by the end of the decade.
“The addition of the A350s will enable us to connect Indian metros to key global cities, enhance travel options for customers, and strengthen partnerships with international carriers,” IndiGo said in a statement.
In preparation for its wide-body operations, IndiGo began inducting six temporarily leased aircraft earlier in March 2025, with deliveries expected to be completed by 2026.
With a current fleet of over 400 aircraft and more than 2,200 daily flights, IndiGo is steadily positioning itself as a serious player in the global aviation landscape.
