IAF officers bid farewell to fallen spouses in solemn military ceremonies
New Delhi, November 25. Two Indian Air Force officers, each grappling with profound personal loss, paid their final respects to their husbands – both fellow officers who died in separate aviation tragedies – upholding the highest traditions of military service.
Squadron Leader Aarti Vashisht stood in impeccable uniform as her husband, Squadron Leader Siddharth Vashisht, was laid to rest with full military honours after a Mi-17 helicopter crash in Budgam on February 27, 2019. Despite her grief, she rendered a salute and placed a wreath at the ceremony, embodying courage as she honoured a life dedicated to the nation. Squadron Leader Siddharth Vashisht was posthumously awarded the Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry.
In a similar display of strength and devotion to duty, Wing Commander Afshan Akhtar bid an emotional farewell to her husband, Wing Commander Namansh Syal, who died in a Tejas fighter jet crash during a demonstration at the Dubai Airshow 2025 earlier this month. Her salute, held through tears, became a powerful symbol of the love and sacrifice shared by families in uniform.
The two solemn moments, though separated by years, reflect the resilience of service personnel and their families – bound by commitment to the nation, united in loss, and forever honouring the memory of the brave.
