US clears $686-mn upgrade package for Pakistan’s F-16 fleet, signalling renewed strategic tilt
New Delhi, December 12. The United States has approved a $686-million sale of advanced technologies and support equipment to upgrade Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jets, marking the second major enhancement since the Indian Air Force’s Operation Sindoor strikes in May targeted three key F-16 bases across Pakistan.
The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified the US Congress of the proposed sale, which includes 500-pound precision bombs, upgraded avionics, cryptographic gear, precision navigation systems, training, and logistics support, according to media reports. A central component of the package is the Link-16 secure data network, enabling real-time exchange of text, imagery, and video between aircraft and ground controllers – significantly enhancing Pakistan’s air combat and command-and-control capabilities.
According to the DSCA, the upgrades will enable “seamless integration and interoperability” between the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and the US Air Force, strengthening cooperation in counterterrorism and potential contingency operations. The modernisation will refurbish Pakistan’s Block-52 and mid-life upgrade F-16s, extend their service life to 2040, and bolster the country’s ability to address “current and future threats”.
This announcement comes just two months after Washington approved the supply of the latest variants of the AIM-120 AMRAAM, capable of engaging aerial targets at ranges beyond 200 km, surpassing the reach of Pakistan’s China-supplied PL-15E missiles. The contract for the newer C-8 and D-3 AMRAAM variants was awarded to Raytheon in October.
The renewed defence cooperation marks a shift after more than a decade of reduced US military sales to Pakistan.
The latest package follows the IAF’s May 10 strikes on the Jacobabad, Chaklala (Rawalpindi), and Sargodha airbases – critical hubs for F-16 operations, maintenance, and storage of US-origin armaments. With both the missile sale and now this broader upgrade, US-Pakistan military ties appear to be gaining fresh momentum in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor.
