Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty elected First ever Woman President of the Press Club of India in its 68-year history

New Delhi (UNI) The Press Club of India (PCI) on Sunday elected Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty as its first woman President, marking a historic milestone in the club’s journey toward greater gender representation and inclusive leadership.

Sangeeta’s team swept all office-bearers and managing committee positions, scoring an emphatic 21-0, in the elections held on December 13.

Others elected were Jatin Gandhi, Vice President, Afzal Imam, Secretary General, Aditi Rajput, Treasurer, and PR Sunil, Joint Secretary.

Sangeeta Baruah Pisharoty joined UNI in the mid-1990s and met her soulmate Mohan Pisharoty there. Currently the National Affairs Editor with the digital news publication The Wire, she was formerly a special correspondent of.

Former Press Club Secretary General and a distinguished journalist Vinay Kumar observed: Sangeeta has not literally but really broken the glass ceiling.

Outgoing President Gautam Lahiri expressed gratitude to the members of the Press Club of India for their trust and support.

“The Press Club of India has, since its inception, served as a vital institution for journalists from across the country and abroad. The election of its first woman President stands as a powerful symbol of progress and a reaffirmation of the Club’s dedication to equality, diversity, and democratic values,” the outgoing secretary-general of the PCI, Neeraj Thakur, said.
