Bengaluru, December 30, 2025. The Successful Maiden flight of Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv-NG is a historic milestone in India’s Aviation which can be a game changer for both our defence and civil aviation sectors said Minister for Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu.
Speaking after the Successful Maiden flight of Dhruv-NG, an indigenous next generation light helicopter in Bengaluru, the Minister said, “Our goal is that every district, every village, islands, and the northeast should have access to at least one helicopter,” a bold, pan-India vision to transform connectivity across the country.,
The Minister called it a historic milestone and a game-changer for both civil and defense aviation.
“Urban mobility is another area where we are looking at electric rotorcraft or eVTOLs…within a few years, these aircraft will transform urban air travel in India,” he told reporters, emphasizing the government’s focus on futuristic and inclusive aviation.
Minister Naidu framed this achievement as part of India’s broader push for Atmanirbharta (self-reliance). “The development and manufacturing of indigenous helicopters with applications in civil aviation, defense, and tourism is a significant step towards self-reliance and improved connectivity. We have previously undertaken concept projects, some of which did not achieve full success. Today, with this helicopter’s successful flight, we are confident of its potential to revolutionize civil aviation in the country.”
He also highlighted state-level innovations: “I have seen Madhya Pradesh operating its own ambulance services using helicopters under a state policy. Other states are expressing interest in similar programs. This is a new government intervention aimed at encouraging more civil aviation operations in areas such as offshore services, medical evacuation, tourism, and remote connectivity.”
The Minister emphasized the strategic importance of domestic manufacturing. “Lead times for international suppliers are long. Manufacturing helicopters in India ensures faster delivery and strengthens our aerospace ecosystem. This approach benefits both civil aviation and defense sectors, aligning with the vision of the Prime Minister to enhance the manufacturing ecosystem for aviation.”
On technical capabilities, Naidu detailed: “The engine used in this aircraft has already received type certification, a significant milestone. This is a glass-cockpit machine capable of high-altitude operations and can be configured for multiple roles—offshore operations, medical ambulance services, tourism, VIP operations, and connectivity to remote areas. Today, India has around 300 helicopters, but demand is projected at 1,000–1,500 units, so we cannot rely solely on foreign suppliers. This indigenous aircraft is a key step toward achieving that goal.”
Addressing safety concerns from past operations, the Minister reassured stakeholders: “All feedback from previous incidents and international regulators has been carefully considered. Features like emergency exit windows and other critical safety systems have been incorporated to ensure compliance with civil aviation standards. Every potential concern has been addressed, giving us confidence that this aircraft will be certified smoothly for civil operations.”
Highlighting growing interest among states and stakeholders, he added: “Reports from state governments and other aviation players have been submitted to the ministry. We are analyzing these reports, taking further comments, and developing policies to facilitate civil helicopter operations across the country.”
Concluding his remarks, Minister Naidu called the maiden flight a defining moment: “This is a landmark occasion for both defense and civil aviation in India. The collaboration between these sectors has produced a versatile, multi-role helicopter that can operate anywhere, at any time, for any mission. Today’s successful flight marks the beginning of a new era in India’s civil aviation, expanding access, ensuring safety, and promoting indigenous manufacturing in line with the nation’s vision of self-reliance.”
