Civil aviation infrastructure upgraded at Air Force Station Leh to boost tourism
New Delhi, January 29. A project to develop and upgrade civil aviation infrastructure at Air Force Station Leh was inaugurated on January 28 by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta in the presence of Air Marshal JS Mann, Senior Air Staff Officer, Western Air Command.
The inauguration marks a key step in strengthening civil aviation facilities in the union territory of Ladakh and reflects close coordination between the civil administration and multiple agencies involved in the region’s development. Despite the challenges posed by high-altitude terrain and harsh weather conditions, the infrastructure upgrade was completed in record time.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the enhanced facilities will allow smoother aircraft ground movement and faster civil departures, leading to reduced turnaround times and improved passenger convenience.
The improved infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance air connectivity to the Leh sector, providing a boost to tourism and creating new economic opportunities while supporting local livelihoods. At the same time, the upgrades will ensure more reliable air services for residents and visitors and strengthen the region’s capacity to respond quickly to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations.
The project is seen as an important contribution to Ladakh’s long-term socio-economic development, reinforcing aviation as a critical enabler of growth and connectivity in the region.
