Pawan Hans to acquire 10 HAL Dhruv NG Helicopters as HAL pushes into civil aviation

HYDERABAD. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to secure a major civilian aviation order, with state-owned helicopter operator Pawan Hans Limited planning to purchase ten Dhruv Next Generation (NG) helicopters in the near future, HAL Chairman and Managing Director DK. Sunil has said.

Speaking to reporters on June 28, the opening day of Wings India 2026, at Begumpet Airport here, Sunil underscored HAL’s strategic shift towards expanding its presence in the civilian aircraft segment. He noted that while nearly 97 percent of HAL’s business has traditionally been anchored in defence manufacturing, the company has in recent years consciously moved to diversify its portfolio and increase civil aviation sales.

Sunil said HAL is close to obtaining certification for the civil variant of the Dhruv NG helicopter. Describing it as a third-generation aircraft, he highlighted its modern glass cockpit and an indigenously manufactured HAL engine. The helicopter recently completed its first flight during an event attended by the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, and certification is expected to be completed within the next couple of months.

Pawan Hans will be the launch customer for the civil Dhruv NG, with the order for 10 helicopters marking HAL’s first major sale of the NG variant. According to Sunil, the helicopters will be deployed for offshore operations for ONGC, operating between Mumbai and the Bombay High oilfields, beginning in the 2026-27 financial year.

The Dhruv NG is equipped with multiple built-in safety features, including terrain awareness systems, and is powered by a civil-certified engine. Sunil added that HAL sees significant potential for the helicopter in roles such as Border Security Force operations, heli-tourism in northern regions, and emergency evacuation services along highways.
