Moudge-class Frigate IRIS Dena (75) struck by a US MK 48 heavyweight torpedo
New Delhi, March 4, 2026. In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, a United States Navy attack submarine has sunk an Iranian naval frigate off the coast of Sri Lanka, marking a significant expansion of the ongoing US–Iran conflict into the Indo-Pacific theatre.
According to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the submarine engaged and destroyed the Iranian vessel using an MK-48 heavyweight torpedo during an operation conducted under the authority of the US Indo-Pacific Command. The announcement was made during a Pentagon briefing on Wednesday, March 4.
“This is the first time since World War II that a US submarine has sunk an enemy vessel using a torpedo,” Hegseth stated, underscoring the historic nature of the engagement.
