Indian Navy to commission indigenous stealth frigate Taragiri on April 3
New Delhi, March 21. The Indian Navy is set to commission its latest stealth frigate, Taragiri (F41), on April 3 in Visakhapatnam, marking a significant milestone in India’s push for maritime self-reliance. The commissioning ceremony will be presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence.
Taragiri is the fourth vessel under the Project 17A class of stealth frigates and represents a major advancement in indigenous warship design and construction. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, the 6,670-tonne warship underscores the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence manufacturing sector.
The frigate features a modern, stealth-oriented design with a significantly reduced radar signature, enhancing its operational effectiveness in contested maritime environments. With over 75 percent indigenous content, the project reflects the success of the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India) initiatives. More than 200 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have contributed to its construction, supporting employment and strengthening the domestic defence ecosystem.
Powered by a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion system, Taragiri is designed for high-speed, long-endurance missions across a range of maritime operations. Its advanced weapons suite includes supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and specialised anti-submarine warfare systems. These are integrated through a sophisticated combat management system, enabling rapid and precise threat response.
Beyond combat roles, the frigate is equipped to undertake humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, reflecting the evolving role of naval platforms in both security and diplomacy.
The induction of Taragiri is expected to further enhance the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities as it continues its transition into a modern, self-reliant force tasked with safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
