India, Bangladesh signal fresh push to deepen ties after Jaishankar-Rahman talks in New Delhi
New Delhi, April 9. India and Bangladesh on Tuesday signalled their intent to reinvigorate bilateral cooperation as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held talks with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in New Delhi.
The meeting, held on April 8, was also attended by Humayun Kabir, Adviser on Foreign Affairs to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, reflecting Dhaka’s emphasis on re-engaging with New Delhi at the highest levels.
During the discussions, Jaishankar reiterated India’s desire to work constructively with Bangladesh’s new government and to further strengthen the wide-ranging partnership between the two neighbours. Both sides agreed to examine fresh proposals to deepen cooperation through existing bilateral mechanisms, with follow-up official-level meetings expected in the near future.
“Pleased to host FM Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh and his delegation this afternoon,” Jaishankar posted on his X handle. “We discussed strengthening our bilateral relationship in its various facets. Also exchanged views on regional and global developments. Agreed to remain in close touch.”
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, the ministers also exchanged views on regional and global issues of shared interest, underscoring the strategic importance both countries attach to coordination on wider geopolitical developments.
As part of his visit, Rahman also called on National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, indicating that discussions extended beyond diplomacy to include security and energy cooperation.
