Dr Prahlada Rama Rao – The Man Behind Akash, BrahMos Missiles and Beyond
Dr Prahlada Rama Rao comes across not merely as a technocrat who helped shape India’s missile capabilities, but as a deeply reflective leader who understands that technology, at its core, is about people, trust and purpose.
Dr Prahlada, as he likes to be known, is an Indian aerospace engineer who served as the former Director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), the largest of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) laboratories in India. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with the Padma Shri.
His journey through India’s missile programmes reveals a personality defined by quiet confidence, relentless work ethic and an unwavering belief in team-driven success.
Dr Kalam’s inspiring Leadership
At the heart of his story stands the towering influence of the late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the tallest Indian aerospace scientist and President of India. He speaks of Dr Kalam not just as a mentor, but as a force who enabled ideas and empowered people.
At a time when scepticism surrounded indigenous missile development, Kalam’s faith in the 34-year-old Prahlada to lead complex programmes was transformative. “He said, ‘Don’t worry, we will make it happen,” Dr Prahlada recalls. That trust was not symbolic; it was about institutional backing, freedom to experiment, and the confidence to attempt what many would have considered impossible.
Dr Kalam’s leadership style left a lasting imprint on Dr Prahlada. One of his most powerful lessons was to detach individuals from hierarchy and attach them to purpose. “Your boss is your project, not Kalam,” he remembers his mentor as saying.
It was a philosophy that eliminated ego and fostered accountability. The result was a culture where scientists worked not to please superiors, but to deliver outcomes. That clarity of mission, Dr Prahlada suggests, is what turned teams into cohesive, high-performing units.
Missile Breakthroughs
As a scientist and programme leader, his contributions at DRDL were marked by four critical breakthroughs that strengthened India’s missile ecosystem.
The first was propulsion.
At a time when key technologies like ramjet propulsion did not exist domestically, his team built that capability from scratch. “Today we can make any propulsion for any missile,” he notes with understated pride.
The second was mastering what he calls “one-shot devices, mechanisms that must work flawlessly the first time, every time. In a missile, there are no second chances.
Designing and validating such systems demanded a level of precision and reliability that became a defining strength of India’s programmes.
The third breakthrough was the development of the Phased Array Radar, a leap from the mechanically steered systems to electronically controlled tracking. This enabled faster, more accurate detection and engagement of targets, laying the foundation for modern air defence systems.
The fourth was the integration of C4ISR — Command, Control, Communication, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance.
Guidance
Dr Prahlada emphasises that weapons alone are not enough; they must be guided by real-time intelligence. “You may have a weapon, but if it does not know where to go, it is useless.” This systems-level thinking, bringing together sensors, networks and strike capability marked a decisive shift in India’s operational readiness.
Beyond Technology
Yet, beyond technology, Dr Prahlada repeatedly returns to a central concern: Leadership.
For him, India’s future hinges not on resources or talent, but on identifying and empowering the right people. “We have everything, money, people, expertise. What we need is correct leadership.”
He credits Dr Kalam’s rare ability to spot and nurture leaders, and argues that institutionalising this process is critical for sustained progress.
His personal journey, however, came at a cost. Work-life balance was, by his own admission, “a big problem.” Constant travel, long hours, and the pressure of deadlines meant that family life often took a back seat. His wife would joke that he treated home like a transit stop.
Yet, over time, as successes became visible, his family came to understand the significance of his work, an emotional arc that adds a human dimension to his otherwise formidable career.
Recognition, when it came in the form of national honours such as the Padma awards, was not merely for individual achievement but for a lifetime of nation-building. His legacy is embedded in systems that continue to safeguard India, and equally in the values he espouses: Integrity, Objectivity, and Collective effort.
An instance is the Akash missile, used effectively in Operation Sindoor after Pakistan’s terror attacks last year.
