Modi, Trump discuss West Asia situation, reaffirm commitment to deepen India-US strategic ties
New Delhi, April 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14 spoke with US President Donald Trump over the phone, with the two leaders reviewing developments in West Asia and reiterating their resolve to further strengthen the India-US partnership.
In a post on X after the conversation, Modi said he had received a call from “my friend President Donald Trump” and that both sides took stock of the significant progress made across multiple sectors of bilateral cooperation. He affirmed that India and the United States remain committed to advancing their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across all domains.
The leaders also exchanged views on the evolving situation in West Asia, underlining the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure for global trade and energy supplies.
New Delhi welcomed the ceasefire between the US and Iran, expressing hope that it would pave the way for lasting peace in the region. India has maintained that the conflict has inflicted considerable hardship on civilians while also disrupting global energy flows and trade networks. It has stressed the need for uninterrupted freedom of navigation and the smooth movement of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier this month, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor had said that Washington sees New Delhi as central to its long-term global strategy. In an interview with Span magazine, Gor noted that the US is seeking to elevate ties with India into what he described as the defining strategic partnership of the 21st century.
Highlighting the personal rapport between the two leaders, Gor said President Trump considers Prime Minister Modi a close friend, a relationship he believes adds momentum to broader bilateral engagement.
According to the envoy, defence cooperation remains the cornerstone of the partnership. He referred to the existing Major Defence Partnership and a new 10-year framework aimed at expanding collaboration in defence manufacturing, science and technology, and operational coordination.
