New Delhi, April 29. Senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Ravi Shankar, currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Ukraine, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Greece.
A 1995-batch IFS officer, Shankar brings over three decades of diplomatic experience to the new assignment, marking another significant milestone in his distinguished career.
He joined the IFS in September 1995, backed by a strong academic foundation. He holds a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University.
Over the years, Shankar has served in several key Indian missions abroad, including postings in Paris, Tunis, Hanoi, and Rome. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Rome, gaining extensive exposure to European diplomatic affairs.
His senior roles at the Ministry of External Affairs and allied offices in New Delhi reflect his breadth of experience in both bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. These include serving as Additional Secretary in charge of the South East Asia Division, Joint Secretary in the Multilateral Economic Relations Division, Joint Secretary-cum-Social Secretary at the President’s Secretariat from 2020 to 2022, and Chief Staff Officer to the Minister of State for External Affairs earlier in his career.
Shankar was appointed Ambassador to Ukraine in August 2024, a sensitive diplomatic posting amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the region, and took charge at the Embassy of India in Kyiv the same month.
Earlier, he served as High Commissioner to Uganda from 2017 to 2020, with concurrent accreditation to Rwanda and Burundi.
With experience spanning Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia, Shankar’s appointment to Greece is expected to bolster India’s diplomatic engagement in the Mediterranean and wider European region.
He is married to Akanksha Shankar, and the couple has a daughter and a son.
