Indian worker killed as Ukrainian drone strike hits Moscow region, injures several
Moscow, May 18. At least four people, including an Indian national, were killed and around a dozen others injured after one of Ukraine’s largest drone attacks struck targets in Russia’s Moscow region, local authorities said on May 17. Drone debris was also reported near Sheremetyevo International Airport, Russia’s busiest airport, though no damage was recorded there.
In a statement posted on X, the Embassy of India in Moscow confirmed that one Indian worker had died and three others were injured in the strike. Embassy officials visited the site and met the injured workers at a hospital. The mission expressed condolences and said it was coordinating with company management and local authorities to extend necessary assistance. The identity of the deceased was not disclosed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the drone offensive, describing the strikes as “entirely justified” amid intensifying hostilities between Kyiv and Moscow. The overnight operation reportedly targeted installations in and around the Russian capital.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at least 12 people were injured in the city, most of them near the entrance to a major oil refinery, as air defences engaged multiple drones approaching the capital.
The incident underscores the widening scope of drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine, with attacks increasingly reaching deep into Russian territory.
