Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team marks 30 years with commemorative display at Bidar
New Delhi, May 28. The Indian Air Force’s famed Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) celebrated its 30th anniversary at the Air Force Station Bidar on May 26, marking three decades of precision flying and aerial displays that have become synonymous with the force’s public outreach and flying excellence.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence on May 28, the celebrations were attended by Air Chief Marshal AP Singh and Air Marshal S Shrinivas. In a key highlight of the event, both senior officers flew alongside the aerobatic team during a special commemorative aerial display.
A solemn “Hollow Diamond” formation was also flown to honour members of the team who lost their lives in service over the years. The tribute underscored the camaraderie, courage and spirit that have defined the aerobatic squadron since its inception.
Formed in 1996 at Bidar, the Surya Kiran team has performed more than 800 air displays in India and abroad, entertaining millions with its close-formation manoeuvres and aerobatic precision. Operating the BAE Systems Hawk Mk 132 aircraft in its distinctive red-and-white colours, the team continues to represent the professionalism and flying skills of the Indian Air Force.
The team’s motto, “Sadaiva Sarvottam” – meaning “Always the Best” – remains central to its legacy as one of the country’s most recognisable military aerobatic formations.
