Admiral Krishna Swaminathan assumes charge as Indian Navy chief
New Delhi, May 31. Admiral Krishna Swaminathan on May 31 took over as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who retired after completing more than four decades of service in the Indian Navy.
A specialist in communication and electronic warfare, Admiral Swaminathan brings with him nearly 39 years of operational, command and staff experience across a wide spectrum of naval assignments. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, and has since held several key appointments at sea and ashore.
Prior to assuming the Navy’s top post, Admiral Swaminathan served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, one of the Indian Navy’s most important operational commands responsible for maritime security in the Arabian Sea and the western seaboard.
Over the course of his career, he has commanded a number of frontline warships, including guided missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, guided missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, giving him extensive experience across diverse naval platforms and operational environments.
Following his promotion to Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi before taking charge as Flag Officer Sea Training, where he oversaw operational preparedness and training standards across the fleet. He later commanded the Western Fleet, often referred to as the “Sword Arm” of the Indian Navy, and subsequently served as Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Adviser on Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India.
As a Vice Admiral, he held several senior leadership positions, including Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, Controller Personnel Services, Chief of Personnel and Vice Chief of the Naval Staff at Naval Headquarters. These appointments gave him extensive experience in force management, personnel policies, operational planning and capability development.
Admiral Swaminathan is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and has undergone professional military education at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, the College of Naval Warfare and the United States Naval War College.
His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, a master’s degree in telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, a master’s degree in defence studies from King’s College London, an MPhil in Strategic Studies from University of Mumbai and a PhD in International Studies from the same institution.
For his distinguished service to the nation, Admiral Swaminathan has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.
His appointment comes at a time when the Indian Navy is pursuing an ambitious modernisation programme aimed at enhancing maritime capabilities, strengthening indigenous defence production and expanding India’s strategic presence across the Indian Ocean Region and the wider Indo-Pacific.
