Defence Ministry signs ₹425-cr marine turbine deal with Bharat Forge
New Delhi, June 19. The Ministry of Defence on June 19 signed a contract worth about ₹425 crore ($45 million) with Pune-based Bharat Forge Limited for the procurement of 12 sets of 1.25 MW marine gas turbine generators for the Indian Navy, marking a major step towards strengthening indigenous capabilities in critical naval technologies.
The agreement, concluded under the Buy (Indian) category, was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The generators will have a minimum indigenous content of 60 percent.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the project is aimed at reinforcing the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India) and ‘Make in India’ initiatives by fostering a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem and enhancing self-reliance in strategic maritime technologies.
The ministry said the indigenous production of the generators, coupled with end-to-end lifecycle support, would improve the Indian Navy’s operational preparedness and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers for critical equipment.
Marine gas turbine generators form a key component of modern naval warships, providing power for essential combat systems as well as advanced weapons and sensors. The contract is expected to pave the way for the development of an indigenous capability for manufacturing such generators, which are considered the backbone of power generation systems onboard frontline naval platforms.
