Operation Amistad: India sends relief teams and supplies to quake-hit Venezuela
New Delhi, June 26. India on June 26 launched Operation Amistad, a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission aimed at supporting earthquake-hit Venezuela, dispatching rescue personnel, medical teams and emergency supplies to assist relief efforts in the South American country.
As part of the operation, two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft departed for Venezuela on the morning of June 26 carrying humanitarian aid and a 41-member rescue contingent to support ongoing search, rescue and medical operations in the areas affected by the devastating earthquake.
The relief package includes a self-sufficient Indian medical task force, an Indian Army field hospital unit equipped with humanitarian assistance and disaster relief pallets and medicines, 30 tonnes of relief material, six tonnes of medicines and medical equipment, and two BHISHM Cube portable hospitals.
The 41-member team, comprising experienced rescue personnel and medical professionals, will work in close coordination with Venezuelan authorities in conducting search and rescue operations, providing emergency medical assistance and supporting humanitarian relief activities.
Describing the mission as a gesture of solidarity with the people of Venezuela, the Government of India expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the earthquake and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the disaster.
India said it stands firmly with the government and people of Venezuela during this difficult period and remains ready to provide additional assistance if required.
The operation adds to India’s growing record of overseas humanitarian and disaster relief missions and reflects New Delhi’s emphasis on being a first responder during crises in the Global South.
