Indian Coast Guard rescues six fishermen in challenging search and rescue operation off Mangaluru

Bengaluru, June 30, 2026. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully rescued six fishermen from the distressed Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Manju Matha during a challenging Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) operation conducted off the coast of Mangaluru on the evening of June 29, 2026. The operation showcased the Indian Coast Guard’s exceptional professionalism, operational readiness and unwavering commitment towards safeguarding lives at sea.

At approximately 1600 hrs on June 29, 2026, Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sachet intercepted a VHF radio distress call from IFB Manju Matha, which was located nearly 33 nautical miles off the Suratkal coast. The fishing vessel reported severe flooding and hull damage caused by rough sea conditions, placing the lives of all six crew members in imminent danger. Responding without delay, ICGS Sachet was immediately diverted to render assistance and established rendezvous with the distressed vessel within 90 minutes.

The rescue operation was carried out under extremely adverse weather conditions. Rough seas, strong winds, poor visibility and the onset of darkness posed significant challenges to the mission. Displaying exceptional seamanship, precision and coordination, the crew of ICGS Sachet successfully executed the rescue by deploying remote-operated lifebuoys specially designed for operations in inclement sea conditions. By 1800 hrs, all six fishermen had been rescued safely without any injuries. Following the successful rescue, ICGS Sachet proceeded to New Mangalore Port for the safe disembarkation of the rescued fishermen and completion of the necessary formalities.

The successful operation once again underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s steadfast commitment to its motto, “Vayam Rakshamah” (We Protect). It reflects the force’s ability to effectively combine advanced rescue technology with the courage, skill and professionalism of its personnel to respond swiftly and efficiently to maritime emergencies, ensuring the safety and security of lives at sea.
