651 Indian peacekeepers in DR Congo honoured with UN medals for distinguished service
United Nations, July 5. In a major recognition of India’s longstanding contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations, 651 Indian Army personnel deployed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were awarded the United Nations Medal for their distinguished service under the UN peacekeeping mission.
The medals were presented during a ceremonial Medal Parade held on July 3 at the Permanent Operating Base Sake in eastern DRC, where the Indian contingent is serving as part of the United Nations Organisation Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), the Indian Army said on Saturday.
The ceremony was attended by senior MONUSCO officials, representatives from the Force Headquarters, military commanders and other dignitaries, who acknowledged the Indian contingent’s professionalism, operational excellence and unwavering commitment while serving in one of the world’s most demanding peacekeeping missions.
According to the Army, Indian peacekeepers have continued to perform with exceptional courage and resilience despite operating in an environment marked by persistent armed violence, instability and complex humanitarian challenges.
“Serving in one of the United Nations’ most demanding and volatile peacekeeping environments, the Indian contingent has consistently demonstrated courage, resilience and unwavering commitment in protecting civilians, enhancing security, facilitating humanitarian assistance and supporting the implementation of the UN mandate amid persistent armed violence and complex humanitarian challenges,” the Army said.
The Army noted that the award of the United Nations Medal reflects the Indian Army’s enduring reputation as one of the UN’s most dependable and professional troop contributors. It also underscores India’s steadfast commitment to promoting international peace and security while protecting vulnerable communities in conflict-affected regions.
India has been among the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations for decades, with its troops earning global recognition for their professionalism, discipline and humanitarian approach in conflict zones across the world.
The Medal Parade concluded with the Indian peacekeepers reaffirming their commitment to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and selfless service while serving under the UN flag. The Army said the contingent pledged to continue carrying out its responsibilities with honour, courage and distinction, further strengthening India’s legacy as a leading force for global peace.
