India’s Hamsa announces big 200-Seater indigenous Aircraft Project

Farnborough. India unveiled one of its most ambitious civil aerospace projects yet at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 21, 2026, with Hyderabad-based HAMSA Industries Pvt. Ltd. announcing a strategic partnership with European aerostructures specialist Aernnova Engineering Division aimed at developing the country’s first indigenous 200-seat commercial passenger aircraft.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marks the first formal international engineering collaboration for the HAMSA programme, which has set itself the long-term goal of designing, certifying and manufacturing a single-aisle commercial jet in India.
If successful, the aircraft would enter the world’s largest and most competitive commercial aviation segment, currently dominated by the Airbus A320neo family and Boeing’s 737 MAX, while China’s COMAC C919 has recently emerged as a third competitor. Aircraft carrying around 180 to 220 passengers form the backbone of airline fleets worldwide because they offer the best combination of operating economics, passenger capacity and route flexibility.
For India, the project represents a bold attempt to move beyond its established role as a supplier of aerospace components and engineering services into the far more demanding business of designing and building complete commercial aircraft.
Although Indian companies manufacture structures, systems and components for many of the world’s leading aerospace manufacturers, the country has never produced a commercially successful modern passenger jet. Indian airlines continue to depend almost entirely on imported aircraft from Airbus and Boeing even as the country’s aviation market is among the fastest growing in the world.
HAMSA says its vision extends beyond producing a single aircraft. The company aims to create the engineering expertise, manufacturing capability, certification knowledge and industrial supply chain needed to establish a sustainable commercial aerospace industry in India.
“Our vision is to see an indigenous 200-seat commercial aircraft designed, certified and manufactured in India,” said Umesh Vankayalapati, Managing Director of HAMSA Industries.
“Achieving that ambition requires more than developing an aircraft; it requires building a national aerospace ecosystem. Our collaboration with Aernnova Engineering Division represents an important first step in creating that capability.”
Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly evaluate opportunities in aerostructures engineering, structural architecture, manufacturing engineering and digital engineering before defining initial work packages.
The choice of partner is significant. Aernnova is one of Europe’s leading aerostructures engineering companies, with extensive experience in designing aircraft structures and supporting major international commercial aircraft programmes. That expertise could prove valuable in helping an emerging Indian programme navigate the complex engineering and certification requirements involved in developing a modern airliner.

Daniel Hayes, Strategic Advisor to the HAMSA programme, described the initiative as an effort to create long-term national capability rather than simply develop a single aircraft.
“By combining international aerospace experience with India’s engineering talent and industrial ambition, we aim to establish the foundations required to design, certify and manufacture India’s next generation of commercial aircraft. Today’s announcement marks the beginning of that journey.”
Developing a new commercial airliner is among the most technically demanding industrial undertakings in the world. It requires billions of dollars in investment, years of design and flight testing, stringent certification by aviation regulators and the creation of a global supply chain capable of supporting aircraft throughout decades of airline service.
The announcement nevertheless reflects India’s broader ambition to strengthen indigenous aerospace capabilities across both defence and civil aviation. While programmes such as the Tejas light combat aircraft and the proposed Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) have focused on military aviation, the HAMSA initiative seeks to establish a comparable long-term capability in the commercial sector.
The two organisations said they will now begin a series of technical workshops and engineering studies to define an initial roadmap for collaboration as the programme moves into its next phase.
