Farnborough. The towering full-scale display of General Atomics’ FQ-42A Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 symbolises how rapidly the character of air warfare is changing. Designed for a future in which autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, networked operations and human-machine teaming dominate the battlespace, the FQ-42A reflects a new generation of combat aviation where unmanned aircraft will increasingly operate alongside manned fighters as force multipliers.
Yet, while the aircraft represents tomorrow’s vision of aerial warfare, General Atomics’ engagement with India has already entered a far more tangible phase through the landmark MQ-9B procurement programme and an expanding industrial partnership that could eventually extend well beyond unmanned aircraft.
Speaking during the Farnborough International Airshow 2026, Dr. Vivek Lall, Chief Executive of General Atomics Global Corporation, outlined the company’s evolving roadmap for India, covering everything from the MQ-9B programme and maintenance infrastructure to collaborative combat aircraft, airborne early warning systems, indigenous manufacturing partnerships, advanced weapons and India’s growing defence innovation ecosystem.
Dr. Lall described the aircraft as an important milestone in the evolution of future combat aviation. He said General Atomics was proud to showcase the Collaborative Combat Aircraft at Farnborough while simultaneously advancing the implementation of the government-to-government MQ-9B agreement between India and the United States. Although the MQ-9B programme remains the company’s immediate priority in India, the emergence of collaborative autonomous combat aircraft signals the direction in which future air forces are moving.
According to Dr. Lall, implementation of India’s MQ-9B acquisition is progressing steadily. Beyond delivering the aircraft, General Atomics is focused on establishing a comprehensive maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capability inside India, ensuring long-term operational support and greater self-reliance. Rather than creating a completely standalone facility, the company intends to build an industrial ecosystem by partnering extensively with Indian companies possessing specialised expertise across structures, avionics, payload integration and other aerospace technologies.

He revealed that discussions have already taken place with between 30 and 50 Indian companies as General Atomics evaluates potential industrial partners capable of supporting the programme. These conversations are expected to shape the broader maintenance and support ecosystem that will underpin MQ-9B operations in India while also strengthening indigenous aerospace capabilities.
Dr. Lall highlighted the growing international interest in adapting the MQ-9B platform for additional operational roles, particularly as an unmanned Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft. Such a capability could offer significant operational advantages by combining persistent surveillance with substantially lower operating costs than conventional crewed AEW platforms. He believes the concept has considerable global potential and could also address future Indian military requirements.Since the MQ-9B fleet is already destined for the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Indian Army, Dr. Lall observed that an AEW variant could naturally evolve into a tri-service capability, offering extended persistence while reducing operational expenditure.
Bids Submitted for MALE Programme
On India’s ongoing requirement for 87 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) unmanned aircraft, Dr. Lall confirmed that bids have already been submitted and the programme now awaits the government’s next decision. General Atomics has partnered with Larsen & Toubro for this competition, positioning itself to contribute to another major indigenous unmanned aircraft programme should the project move forward.
Dr. Lall noted that the FQ-42A platform has already entered production under contract for the United States, while international interest continues to grow. Although India has not yet articulated its future Collaborative Combat Aircraft requirements, General Atomics is engaged in discussions with several governments worldwide regarding potential exports. Whether the aircraft eventually becomes part of India’s future force structure, he suggested, will depend on government-to-government engagements and evolving operational requirements.
Dr. Lall acknowledged that while manufacturing currently remains based in the United States, any future overseas production would depend on the scale of orders as well as bilateral government decisions. India’s growing manufacturing ambitions, he indicated, make such possibilities worthy of consideration if future programmes justify localisation.
General Atomics’ ambitions in India, however, extend far beyond unmanned aircraft alone. Dr. Lall pointed to the company’s broad technology portfolio, which includes satellite systems, nuclear fusion, nuclear fission technologies, electromagnetic aircraft launch and recovery systems, as well as advanced precision weapons. Among these, he identified the Long Range Manoeuvring Projectile (LRMP) as another capability that could hold significant relevance for India’s future defence requirements.
Beyond platforms and technologies, Dr. Lall expressed strong confidence in India’s rapidly maturing defence innovation ecosystem. He described initiatives such as Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) and the emergence of numerous defence startups as evidence of a genuine structural transformation. India possesses abundant engineering talent and entrepreneurial ambition, he observed, but the next challenge lies in accelerating the transition from successful prototypes to fully operational military capabilities.
General Atomics’ expanding engagement with India reflects precisely this changing strategic environment. Through industrial collaboration, technology partnerships and deeper engagement with India’s rapidly expanding aerospace ecosystem, the company is positioning itself as a strategic partner in India’s journey towards becoming a leading defence and aerospace power.
