Pratt & Whitney Showcases Strong Commercial Momentum and Next-Generation Military Propulsion

Farnborough. Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, used the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 to underline its growing strength in both commercial aviation and defence propulsion, announcing a series of major commercial engine orders while also unveiling progress on a new-generation military engine designed for collaborative combat platforms.
The company’s presence at the airshow was marked by robust demand for its Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine family, which crossed a significant commercial milestone this year, alongside advancements in the development of the Pratt & Whitney Valox 1500 engine for future autonomous and semi-autonomous military systems.
GTF Orders Cross 800 in 2026
Pratt & Whitney announced that it has secured more than 800 GTF engine orders and commitments since the beginning of 2026, reinforcing strong market confidence in the engine despite the industry’s well-publicised supply chain and maintenance challenges.
The latest commitments come from a broad spectrum of airlines and aircraft lessors, including Abra Group, AirAsia, Azorra, Binter, British Airways, Finnair, Jackson Square Aviation, Luxair, Scoot, Tigerair Taiwan and VietJet.
With these additions, the GTF programme has now accumulated more than 14,000 engine orders and commitments from over 90 customers worldwide, making it one of the most successful propulsion programmes in the single-aisle aircraft segment.
Rick Deurloo, President of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, said the continued demand reflected customer confidence in both the current engine and its next evolution.”We see strong demand for the GTF engine and continued confidence in the value it delivers to customers.”
He added that the GTF Advantage, scheduled to enter commercial service later this year, will significantly improve operational economics by offering up to twice the time on wing, industry-leading fuel efficiency and enhanced aircraft range capability.
The GTF engine remains one of the most fuel-efficient powerplants available for single-aisle commercial aircraft. Compared with previous-generation engines, it delivers up to 20% lower fuel consumption while reducing the aircraft’s noise footprint by 75%.Its geared architecture, considered a major technological breakthrough in commercial propulsion, also provides the foundation for future engine technologies. Pratt & Whitney expects the GTF fleet to accumulate more than 300 million flight hours by the mid-2030s, highlighting the programme’s long-term growth trajectory.
Landmark Order from BOC Aviation
Further strengthening its Farnborough announcements, Pratt & Whitney confirmed one of the year’s largest leasing company commitments.BOC Aviation placed an order for up to 220 Pratt & Whitney GTF engines to power up to 110 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft, making it the lessor’s largest-ever order with Pratt & Whitney.The agreement further expands the nearly three-decade relationship between the two companies.
“This order is the largest that BOC Aviation has placed with Pratt & Whitney and a continuation of our 29-year relationship, reflecting the key role they have played in our growth,” said Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BOC Aviation. The deal reflects continued airline preference for fuel-efficient narrow-body aircraft as carriers seek to reduce operating costs while meeting increasingly stringent environmental targets.
Pratt & Whitney noted that more than 2,800 GTF-powered aircraft are currently in service worldwide with over 90 operators, while the programme maintains an order backlog exceeding 8,000 engines, providing long-term production visibility.The GTF’s combination of lower fuel burn, reduced emissions and substantially quieter operations continues to make it a preferred choice for Airbus A320neo family operators around the world.
Advancing Military Propulsion
Beyond commercial aviation, Pratt & Whitney also highlighted progress in military propulsion with the successful completion of a key design milestone for the Pratt & Whitney Valox1500 engine. The new engine is being developed specifically for semi-autonomous collaborative combat platforms, reflecting the rapidly changing nature of future air combat where manned aircraft increasingly operate alongside autonomous or remotely piloted systems.
The company said a comprehensive digital assessment has confirmed that the engine remains on track to achieve its intended balance of performance, affordability and accelerated development.
Jill Albertelli, President of Pratt & Whitney Military Engines, said the programme demonstrates the company’s ability to rapidly develop propulsion systems tailored to emerging operational requirements.”This milestone reflects Pratt & Whitney’s agility and commitment to delivering critical capability to the warfighter at speed.”
She added that by optimising the engine for reduced mission life and using advanced digital engineering techniques, Pratt & Whitney is creating a more affordable and scalable propulsion solution suited to collaborative combat aircraft and other emerging defence applications.The programme builds on a U.S. Air Force contract worth more than US$10 million, awarded in late 2025 to advance the engine’s development.
Having completed the digital design validation phase, Pratt & Whitney is now preparing the engine for follow-on ground testing, representing the next major milestone before flight demonstrations.
Designed for a New Era of Combat Aviation
The Valox family represents Pratt & Whitney’s latest effort to address the propulsion needs of future military aviation, particularly systems designed around affordability, rapid production and expendable operational concepts.Unlike conventional fighter engines that are engineered for decades of service, the Valox family is optimised for emerging collaborative combat aircraft that prioritise mission effectiveness, scalable manufacturing and lower lifecycle costs.
The programme reflects a broader shift across defence aerospace toward modular, digitally designed propulsion systems capable of supporting increasingly autonomous air operations.

Pratt & Whitney’s announcements at Farnborough underscored the company’s balanced growth strategy across commercial and military aerospace.
On the commercial side, sustained demand for the GTF engine family and continued investments in the GTF Advantage reinforce the company’s position in the highly competitive single-aisle market, where airlines remain focused on fuel efficiency, operating economics and environmental performance.
At the same time, developments in the Valox engine programme demonstrate Pratt & Whitney’s increasing focus on next-generation military propulsion technologies aligned with future collaborative combat concepts.
