Navy chief Krishna Swaminathan begins four-day Mauritius visit to bolster maritime cooperation
New Delhi, August 10. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan began a four-day official visit to Mauritius on August 10, aimed at strengthening bilateral maritime cooperation and further deepening defence ties between the two countries.
The visit, scheduled from August 10 to 13, is Admiral Swaminathan’s first visit to Mauritius after assuming charge as the Navy chief. It underscores the importance India attaches to its longstanding strategic partnership with Mauritius, a key maritime partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
During his visit, Admiral Swaminathan is scheduled to meet senior leaders of the Mauritian government and discuss issues of mutual interest, including maritime security, defence cooperation, capacity building and military collaboration.
The engagements are expected to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the maritime domain, enhance operational-level coordination and further consolidate their strategic partnership.
India and Mauritius have maintained close maritime ties, with the Indian Navy regularly engaging with the Mauritius National Coast Guard through training exchanges, operational interactions, port visits and hydrographic surveys. The two countries also conduct joint surveillance of Mauritius’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), contributing to maritime security in the region.
Mauritius is also a regular participant in several Indian Navy-led multilateral initiatives, including the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), MILAN, the International Fleet Review, the Goa Maritime Conclave, IOS SAGAR and Exercise AIKEYME.
These engagements reflect the shared vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) which seeks to promote greater maritime security, cooperation and development across the Indian Ocean region.
The Navy chief’s visit is expected to provide further momentum to the India-Mauritius maritime partnership, which is anchored in mutual trust and respect and a shared commitment to regional security, stability and cooperation.
