New Delhi, August 23. Indian Navy sailing training ship INS Sudarshini arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, on August 22 as part of its ongoing Lokayan 26 transoceanic expedition, showcasing India’s traditional sailing and seamanship capabilities.
The three-masted barque made its entry into the Portuguese capital through the Tagus River, marking another milestone in its extended voyage.
During its stay in Lisbon, the ship’s crew and trainees are scheduled to take part in professional interactions and cross-deck visits with Portuguese naval personnel. The programme will also include cultural engagements with Portuguese naval leadership, local authorities and members of the Indian diaspora.
The Lisbon visit is the 15th port call made by INS Sudarshini during seven months of its ongoing voyage, reflecting the expedition’s extensive international itinerary and India’s longstanding maritime links with countries across the world.
Through Lokayan 26, the Indian Navy is using the training voyage not only to develop sailing and seamanship skills among its personnel but also to promote maritime cooperation and people-to-people ties with partner countries.
The Navy said the expedition carries a message of friendship, cooperation and camaraderie, with each port call providing opportunities to strengthen India’s maritime relationships and goodwill internationally.
INS Sudarshini is a three-masted barque operated by the Indian Navy as a sail training vessel, providing naval trainees with practical experience in traditional sailing, navigation, teamwork and leadership.
