Bishkek, August 31. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian discussed the worsening situation in West Asia and called for resolving regional disputes through dialogue and diplomacy during their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit here.
The two leaders on August 31 reviewed India-Iran bilateral relations and exchanged views on recent developments in the West Asia conflict.
Modi expressed concern over the escalation of tensions in the region and reiterated India’s consistent position that outstanding issues should be addressed through dialogue and diplomatic efforts rather than military confrontation.
The Prime Minister also stressed the need for sustained international efforts to establish lasting peace and stability in West Asia.
Emphasising the importance of protecting freedom of navigation and unhindered commerce, Modi said civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected under all circumstances. He specifically underscored the need to ensure the safety of commercial shipping and seafarers amid growing tensions in the region.
Modi reaffirmed India’s readiness to work closely with Iran in multilateral forums, including BRICS and the SCO.
The Prime Minister also conveyed that he looked forward to welcoming Pezeshkian to India for the upcoming BRICS Summit, signalling New Delhi’s intent to maintain close engagement with Tehran amid the rapidly evolving regional situation.
