Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma becomes first woman non-medical officer to attain rank in Indian armed forces
New Delhi, September 1. In a landmark development for gender representation in the Indian Armed Forces, Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has become the first woman officer from the non-medical stream in the Indian defence forces to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal or its equivalent.
Sharma assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on September 1, marking a significant milestone in the growing role of women in senior military leadership.
Commissioned into the Education Branch of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on June 18, 1994, Sharma has served in a wide range of assignments during her career spanning more than three decades. Her postings have included training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters, giving her extensive experience across the IAF’s organisational and training structures.
She has also played a key role in strengthening academic and strategic cooperation between the armed forces and leading educational institutions. Among her notable initiatives was the establishment of IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University, aimed at promoting collaboration in academic research and strategic defence-related areas.
Sharma has another distinction to her credit, having become the first woman officer from the tri-services to command a Sainik School. She served as Principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala, marking another significant first in the advancement of women in military leadership and military education.
Her elevation to the rank of Air Vice Marshal represents a new milestone in the increasing participation of women officers in senior positions across the Indian defence forces. It also reflects the expanding opportunities for women to take up leadership responsibilities beyond traditionally assigned medical roles.
With more than 30 years of distinguished service, Air Vice Marshal Sharma’s appointment is being viewed as an important landmark in the continuing evolution of the armed forces towards greater inclusion and wider avenues for women officers to rise to the highest levels of military leadership.
Her career, marked by leadership in education, training and institutional development, continues to embody the IAF’s motto of ‘Touch the Sky with Glory’.
