Global leaders hail Captain Smit Machchhar after flydubai cockpit attack
New Delhi, Oct 1. Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian commander of flydubai Flight FZ1073, has emerged as the central figure in an extraordinary aviation emergency after world leaders praised his courage and presence of mind in helping prevent what Israeli authorities described as an attempted effort to take control of the Dubai-Tel Aviv aircraft.
Machchhar was seriously injured after the co-pilot allegedly attacked him with a knife while the Boeing 737 MAX 8 was airborne on September 30. Despite his injuries, the Indian captain is reported to have resisted the attacker and activated the cockpit-door release, enabling passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck and overpower the co-pilot. The aircraft subsequently made an emergency landing at Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia.
The flight was carrying 174 passengers, including Israeli citizens and other nationals. All passengers survived and were subsequently flown from Tabuk to Tel Aviv on another flydubai aircraft.
Modi: “Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first major world leaders to publicly salute the Indian pilot.
Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO.
In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others.
His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy.

In a message on October 1, Modi described Machchhar as a “HERO”, saying that despite being seriously injured and facing grave danger, he demonstrated courage and an unwavering determination to protect the lives of others.
Modi said the captain’s valour had helped save hundreds of lives and avert a major tragedy. The Prime Minister also spoke to Machchhar’s wife and parents and assured the family that Indian missions were providing assistance to the injured pilot.
The Prime Minister’s intervention gave the episode an immediate national dimension, with Machchhar’s actions being recognised not merely as an example of professional aviation response but as an act of personal courage performed while he himself was under attack.
Netanyahu: “A true hero”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered perhaps the most detailed public tribute to Machchhar.
My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery.
Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker — preventing a catastrophic mid-air…
— Benjamin Netanyahu – בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) September 30, 2026
Netanyahu said the Indian captain had continued to resist even after being stabbed and seriously injured. According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s account, Machchhar opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to enter and overpower the attacker.
Netanyahu credited the captain with helping prevent a “catastrophic mid-air disaster” and said he had saved the lives of all 174 people aboard the aircraft, including Israeli citizens and other nationals.
He concluded his message by calling Machchhar “a true hero” and wishing him a speedy and complete recovery.
The Israeli leader subsequently met passengers from the flight who had intervened during the cockpit struggle, highlighting that the successful outcome involved not only the captain’s actions but also the intervention of passengers and other crew members.
Trump: “He was a hero”
US President Donald Trump also publicly praised Machchhar while speaking to reporters at the Oval Office.
Trump said he had discussed the incident with Netanyahu and described the injured Indian captain as a hero, particularly because he had managed to open the cockpit door despite his injuries.
Trump also praised the passenger who intervened during the confrontation. His comments stressed the sequence in which Machchhar’s action in opening the cockpit enabled others to enter the flight deck and help regain control of the aircraft.
Trump did, however, speculate publicly about the motive of the co-pilot, referring to the possibility that he was a terrorist or mentally disturbed. Those characterisations should not be treated as established facts: authorities are still investigating the circumstances and motive behind the cockpit attack. Flydubai itself has described the episode as an “altercation” and has urged against premature speculation.
President Murmu: “Heroic courage” and “incredible presence of mind”
President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute to Machchhar, focusing particularly on the captain’s ability to remain determined to protect others even after sustaining serious injuries.
The nation is proud of Captain Smit Machchhar. His heroic courage and incredible presence of mind have deeply touched us all.

Murmu said the nation was proud of Machchhar and praised his “heroic courage” and “incredible presence of mind”. She noted that his response in a moment of grave peril helped prevent a major tragedy and save precious lives.
She also saluted what she described as his “indomitable spirit” and expressed her wishes for his speedy recovery.
A crisis that developed within seconds
The significance of Machchhar’s actions becomes clearer when viewed against the rapidly deteriorating situation aboard FZ1073.
According to reports, the aircraft was cruising at high altitude when the cockpit confrontation erupted. Flight-tracking data showed a dramatic descent, with different reports putting the loss of altitude at roughly 14,000 to 18,000 feet in a matter of seconds or around 90 seconds. The aircraft also transmitted emergency signals and was ultimately diverted to Saudi Arabia.
The critical moment was the opening of the cockpit.
With the co-pilot allegedly attempting to take control of the aircraft and Machchhar seriously injured, access to the flight deck became decisive. Once the cockpit door was opened, passengers and crew members were able to enter and restrain the attacker.
The aircraft was subsequently brought under control and diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely.
Thus, while Machchhar did not single-handedly land the aircraft – other crew members and passengers also played an important role – the reports indicate that his resistance and his ability to open the cockpit door were crucial links in the chain of events that prevented the emergency from becoming a mass-casualty disaster.
Israel’s leadership and public join the tribute
The praise has extended beyond Netanyahu.
Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana said Israelis were praying for Machchhar and praised the courage displayed by the Indian pilot during the attack. Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, subsequently described Machchhar as the hero at the centre of the incident.
The reaction among Israeli passengers and members of the public has also been striking. Social-media messages urged people to “remember his name”, while passengers and commentators described the captain’s actions as instrumental in preventing a catastrophe.
For Israel, where the aircraft was carrying a large number of Israeli passengers, the captain’s actions have consequently acquired particular resonance.
India’s diplomatic machinery rallies around the injured captain
The Indian government has also moved quickly to assist Machchhar.
The Indian Embassy in Riyadh said that the captain was receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Tabuk and was reported to be stable. The embassy said it was monitoring his condition and remained in contact with his family.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar praised Machchhar’s “extraordinary courage” and “remarkable presence of mind”, saying that the captain had saved hundreds of lives and averted a major tragedy despite facing grave danger.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh similarly commended the pilot for placing the safety of others before his own and expressed wishes for his recovery.
Who is Captain Smit Machchhar?
Machchhar, a Mumbai-born Indian pilot, has extensive experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft.
According to his professional profile and media reports, he spent about 11 years with SpiceJet before joining flydubai in 2022. He had accumulated roughly 9,500–9,750 flying hours on Boeing 737 aircraft and had served as a senior commander and line-training captain.
His professional experience is relevant to understanding the response under pressure. The crisis reportedly required him to deal simultaneously with a physical attack, serious injuries and an aircraft undergoing a dangerous descent.
Yet the reports indicate that his response was directed toward restoring access to the cockpit and bringing other people into a position where they could intervene.
