Advanced cancer treatment system commissioned at Army Hospital (R&R) in Delhi
New Delhi, May 25. The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) on May 25 strengthened its oncology care capabilities with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Ring Gantry-based Linear Accelerator at the Department of Radiation Oncology of Army Hospital (Research & Referral) here.
The advanced radiotherapy system was inaugurated in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and is expected to significantly improve cancer treatment facilities for serving military personnel, veterans and their dependents.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the new Linear Accelerator will enhance the hospital’s in-house treatment capacity and provide access to advanced radiation therapy techniques for a large number of patients requiring oncology care.
The system is equipped to deliver modern treatment modalities such as Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). These technologies allow highly precise targeting of tumours while reducing radiation exposure to healthy surrounding tissues, thereby improving treatment outcomes and patient safety.
Officials said the newly inducted equipment replaces the older radiotherapy system that has been decommissioned, marking a major technological upgrade in oncology services under the AFMS. The induction is part of a broader effort to modernise cancer treatment infrastructure across military healthcare establishments, with similar upgrades planned for other AFMS oncology centres in phases.
Among those present during the commissioning ceremony were Arti Sarin, Avinash Das and other senior officials of the Armed Forces Medical Services.
