Anduril and Archer combine defence and air taxi technology in new autonomous aircraft

Farnborough, July 20, 2026. Two US aerospace companies from opposite ends of the aviation industry have joined forces to develop a new generation of autonomous aircraft designed for both military and commercial use, underlining the increasingly blurred boundaries between civilian and defence aviation.
Anduril Industries, based in Costa Mesa, California, is one of America’s fastest-growing defence technology companies, specialising in autonomous weapons, drones, artificial intelligence and surveillance systems for the US military and its allies. It has partnered with Archer Aviation, headquartered in San Jose, California, which has been developing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for the emerging urban air mobility, or air taxi, market.
The companies unveiled their jointly developed autonomous vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft platform at the Farnborough International Airshow, saying it had been designed from the outset to serve both defence and civilian customers.
Anduril showcased the military version, known as Thunder, a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft intended to operate alongside existing and next-generation crewed attack and assault helicopters. Rather than replacing conventional helicopters, the aircraft is designed to extend their reach by carrying out reconnaissance, strike and other high-risk missions without exposing pilots to danger.
The platform is the product of a collaboration that seeks to combine Archer’s expertise in advanced electric aircraft with Anduril’s experience in autonomous defence systems. The companies say the result is a new class of aircraft offering greater speed, range, payload capacity and lower operating costs than existing vertical lift platforms.
Unlike conventional helicopters, the aircraft uses a tiltrotor configuration that enables it to take off and land vertically before transitioning into efficient forward flight using fixed wings. This allows it to operate from austere locations without the need for conventional runways while covering much greater distances than traditional rotorcraft.
Power is provided by a series hybrid-electric propulsion system, combining electric motors with an onboard engine to extend endurance beyond the limits of battery-powered aircraft. The aircraft also incorporates optimum-speed tiltrotors that automatically adjust rotor speeds throughout different phases of flight, improving efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and lowering its acoustic signature, an important consideration for military operations.
The companies said they have already completed several test flights using full-scale surrogate aircraft to validate the concept, with Thunder scheduled to make its first flight in 2027.
While Anduril is focusing initially on defence applications, Archer intends to adapt the same basic aircraft platform for commercial use and said it expects to announce its first civilian customers later this week.
The programme represents one of the clearest examples yet of technologies developed for the emerging electric air taxi market being adapted for military applications. Instead of designing separate aircraft for defence and civilian use, the companies have adopted a common platform that can be configured for different missions, potentially reducing development costs and accelerating production.
For armed forces, autonomous aircraft such as Thunder promise a combination of long range, heavy payload capacity and runway-independent operations. They could undertake missions ranging from logistics support and casualty evacuation to intelligence gathering and precision strike operations while reducing the risks faced by aircrew.
For commercial operators, the same technology could eventually be adapted for cargo transport, emergency medical services, offshore energy support, regional transport and, ultimately, passenger operations as the eVTOL market matures.
Speaking at the launch, Shane Arnott, Senior Vice-President of Maneuver Dominance at Anduril, said the programme was intended to bring the most advanced technologies emerging from the commercial eVTOL sector into defence applications.
“From raw performance to producibility, harnessing the best technologies from the commercial eVTOL market for defence is central to how Thunder will deliver operational value to our customers,” he said.
The announcement also reflects a broader trend at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow, where manufacturers are increasingly looking to develop dual-use technologies capable of serving both commercial and military markets. As governments seek more resilient and affordable defence capabilities, and commercial aerospace companies search for new revenue streams, the distinction between civilian and military aviation is becoming progressively less pronounced.
For countries such as India, which are investing heavily in both indigenous defence manufacturing and next-generation aerospace technologies, the programme highlights the growing importance of autonomous aircraft capable of carrying heavy payloads without relying on conventional runways. It also illustrates how advances in the commercial eVTOL sector are beginning to influence military aviation.
