Army Chief unveils Strategic Guidelines 2047 to drive transformation into future-ready force
New Delhi, June 7. Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi has unveiled the Indian Army Strategic Guidelines 2047, a landmark document designed to steer the force’s long-term transformation and align its development with the national vision of a developed India by 2047.
The guidelines, derived from the broader framework of the Defence Forces Vision 2047, seek to translate strategic objectives into actionable plans for capability enhancement, force modernisation, organisational reforms and operational preparedness.
Announcing the development on June 5, the Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI) said the document outlines coherent and actionable lines of effort that will help shape the Indian Army into a technologically advanced and future-ready force. The guidelines are aimed at ensuring that the Army’s capabilities and operations remain aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
The Strategic Guidelines 2047 provide a comprehensive roadmap for addressing emerging security challenges in an increasingly complex and evolving strategic environment. They are intended to offer clear direction for future planning and decision-making across the Army, while driving reforms in key areas such as technology integration, multi-domain operations, force restructuring, human resource development and combat readiness.
The document emphasises the need for an agile and adaptable force capable of operating effectively across the full spectrum of future conflicts. It is expected to serve as a foundational reference for the Army’s modernisation efforts over the coming decades.
A central theme of the Defence Forces Vision 2047 is the promotion of greater jointness and synergy among the armed services. The vision underscores enhanced coordination in planning, operations and capability development as essential to strengthening India’s overall military effectiveness.
The framework also highlights the growing importance of innovation, advanced technologies and modern training methodologies in preparing the armed forces for the changing character of warfare. Building a technologically empowered and adaptable force is identified as a key requirement for meeting future security challenges.
Another major pillar of the vision is ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence. The document advocates the development and adoption of indigenous technologies and defence solutions tailored to India’s specific operational requirements. Strengthening the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem and technological base is expected not only to improve military preparedness but also to contribute to broader national economic growth.
The unveiling of the Strategic Guidelines 2047 marks a significant step in the Indian Army’s long-term transformation agenda, providing a blueprint for evolving into a modern, integrated and self-reliant force by the centenary year of India’s independence.
