Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet eclipses 1 billion passengers

North Charleston (South Carolina), May 2. Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner has officially carried more than one billion passengers since entering commercial service in 2011, achieving the milestone faster than any other widebody aircraft in aviation history. The company announced the achievement on April 30, highlighting the global impact and operational success of its flagship long-haul jet.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet surpassed 1 billion passengers on April 30, 2025, faster than any widebody commercial airplane in history and in less than 14 years since entering service.

In just under 14 years, the Dreamliner fleet – comprising more than 1,175 aircraft – has completed nearly five million flights, accumulating over 30 million flight hours. The jetliner family is now operated by 89 customers worldwide, flying to over 520 airports in more than 85 countries.

“This milestone would not have been possible without the trust and confidence of our customers in operating the 787,” said Scott Stocker, Boeing’s Vice President and General Manager of the 787 Programme. “Flying over one billion passengers in this relatively short time is a testament to how the airplane has delivered on its promises to transform air travel with operational versatility, efficiency and comfort.”

The 787 Dreamliner, known for its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, is 25 percent more fuel efficient than the aircraft it replaced, due to innovations such as lightweight composite materials, advanced engines, and modern aerodynamics. The plane’s success has helped launch more than 425 new nonstop routes, including ultra-long hauls like Qantas’s London-to-Perth service and short hops such as TUI’s Aruba-to-Curaçao segment.

Boeing marked the milestone by releasing a commemorative video and inviting passengers, operators, suppliers, and employees to share their Dreamliner experiences on social media using the hashtag #Dreamliner.

Currently, about 2,100 Dreamliner flights take off each day, transporting approximately 480,000 passengers daily or around 14.5 million people each month. On average, each 787 spends more than 12 hours in the air every day, underscoring the jet’s global popularity and reliability.

The 787 continues to be Boeing’s bestselling widebody aircraft, with more than 2,000 orders to date, reinforcing its central role in reshaping global travel and connectivity.
