Navy launches third Diving Support Craft ‘DSC A 22’ in Kolkata
Kolkata, September 13. The Indian Navy launched DSC A 22, the third vessel under its series of five Diving Support Crafts (DSC), at Titagarh, West Bengal, on September 12. The ship is being built by Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL), Kolkata, under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
The launch ceremony was presided over by Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, Commander-in-Chief, while Kangana Berry performed the traditional ship-launching ritual in keeping with naval maritime tradition.
The contract to build five DSCs was signed between the Ministry of Defence and TRSL in February 2021. Designed for diving operations in coastal waters, the vessels are catamaran-hulled, displacing around 380 tons, and equipped with advanced diving systems.
Officials said the ships have been indigenously designed and built under the Indian Register of Shipping’s naval rules and regulations. Hydrodynamic analysis and model testing were carried out at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam.
The Navy described the DSC series as a significant boost to self-reliance in shipbuilding and a strong addition to India’s coastal operational capabilities.
