Defence Ministry signs ₹586-crore deal for indigenous APUs for T-72, T-90 Tanks
New Delhi, Sep 21. The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹586-crore (around $61.2 million) contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Pvt Ltd for the procurement of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 tanks, in a move aimed at enhancing the operational readiness and sustainability of its armoured formations.
The contract was signed in New Delhi on September 21 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The indigenously developed APUs will provide an alternative source of electrical power for critical tank systems, including the fire-control system, firing circuit and gun stabilisation system, besides supporting other onboard auxiliary equipment.
The induction of the APUs is expected to improve the reliability and operational availability of the Army’s mechanised formations by reducing the dependence on the tank’s main engine for power generation during various operational requirements.
The procurement also marks a step towards indigenisation of critical sub-systems for armoured platforms and has been undertaken under the Make-II category, which is designed to facilitate industry-led research and development of defence equipment.
The Defence Ministry said the contract demonstrates the effectiveness of the Make-II framework in converting indigenous technological innovations into production and eventual induction into the armed forces.
The agreement is part of the government’s broader drive towards ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence and is aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 (Developed India by 2047).
The ministry said the procurement would contribute to the development of a more resilient and self-reliant domestic defence industrial base while strengthening India’s capabilities to design, develop and manufacture critical military technologies within the country.
