DRDO demonstrates advanced Ballistic Missile Defence, tests Naval Anti-Ship Missile
New Delhi, June 13. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully carried out a series of flight tests showcasing key technologies aimed at strengthening India’s ability to counter evolving aerial and maritime threats, marking a significant advance in the country’s indigenous defence capabilities.
According to the Ministry of Defence, three consecutive flight tests were conducted on June 10 and 11 to validate a multi-layered defence architecture against long-range ballistic missile threats and to demonstrate anti-ship strike capability at medium ranges.
As part of the trials, DRDO successfully demonstrated its multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, with interceptor missiles accurately engaging their designated targets. The systems, developed using advanced technologies, are intended to address emerging missile threats and enhance India’s strategic defence shield.
The successful tests place India among a select group of nations possessing ballistic missile defence capabilities capable of intercepting threats ranging up to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), the ministry said.
In a separate milestone, DRDO also conducted the maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR). The missile successfully validated its intended performance, providing the Indian armed forces with an indigenous medium-range anti-ship strike capability.
Senior officials from DRDO and the armed forces witnessed the trials.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the scientists and engineers involved in the programme, describing the successful demonstrations as an important achievement in strengthening the country’s defence preparedness.
Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh closely monitored the trials and commended the collaborative efforts of DRDO laboratories and industry partners in achieving the milestone.
The successful demonstrations underscore India’s continuing push towards self-reliance in critical defence technologies and the development of advanced systems capable of countering increasingly sophisticated threats across multiple domains.
