First indigenous Cadet Training Ship ‘Krishna’ launched at L&T Kattupalli Yard
Chennai, February 17. The first of three Cadet Training Ships (CTS) being built for the Indian Navy was launched at L&T Shipbuilding’s Kattupalli facility near Chennai on February 16 marking a significant step in India’s indigenous shipbuilding efforts.
The vessel, Yard 18003, named Krishna, was ceremonially launched by Anupama Chauhan in keeping with naval traditions. The event was attended by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, along with senior officials from the Indian Armed Forces and L&T Shipbuilding.
Designed and constructed indigenously by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the ship represents a major milestone in the Navy’s ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing capabilities. The formal delivery of the ship to the Indian Navy is scheduled for the end of 2026.
Once commissioned, the Cadet Training Ships will be used to provide sea training to officer cadets, including women, after they complete their basic training ashore. The vessels will also host cadets from friendly foreign countries, enhancing maritime cooperation and professional exchanges.
The launch of Krishna underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to indigenisation and aligns with the Government of India’s broader push for self-reliance under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India) and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
