Flydubai cockpit clash triggers hijack scare, emergency landing in Saudi Arabia

Dubai, Sep 30. A Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flydubai flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia and made an emergency landing in Tabuk on September 30 after a violent incident involving its pilots triggered distress and possible hijacking signals, prompting Israel to scramble fighter aircraft and launch an urgent security assessment.

Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 Max 8, operating from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport, landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk. Flydubai said all passengers were safe and accounted for, while Saudi airport authorities said the captain and first officer were injured and taken to hospital.

The airline has so far described the cause only as an “incident” and said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities. The precise circumstances and motive remained under investigation.

Emergency signals trigger hijacking fears

The incident unfolded after the aircraft had been flying normally for more than two hours. According to flight-tracking data from Flightradar24, the aircraft first transmitted 7700, the internationally recognised transponder code for a general emergency.

A few minutes later, it transmitted 7500, the code indicating unlawful interference with an aircraft and commonly associated with a hijacking. The aircraft subsequently transmitted 7700 again before landing in Tabuk.

The change in transponder codes, coupled with the aircraft’s abrupt change of course over the region, initially raised fears that the flight had been hijacked while en route to Israel.

Israeli authorities responded by scrambling fighter aircraft as a precaution. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also held security consultations as authorities sought to establish what had happened aboard the aircraft.

The aircraft diverted towards northwestern Saudi Arabia rather than continuing towards Tel Aviv and landed safely in Tabuk. Saudi airport authorities said air traffic control received the aircraft’s distress call at 8:44 am local time, with the plane landing at about 9:45 am.

Violent confrontation in cockpit

Initial reports from Israeli officials and other sources indicated that the emergency was linked to a physical confrontation between the two pilots in the cockpit.

Three Israeli officials told Reuters that the co-pilot was believed to have stabbed the captain, leading to the emergency diversion. The officials said Israeli authorities were examining whether the incident could have been an attempted terror attack.

Passenger accounts provided to Israeli media described screams and signs of a struggle near the cockpit. One passenger’s mother, speaking to AFP, said her daughter had reported seeing blood after one pilot allegedly attacked the other with a knife. Other reports said passengers and off-duty pilots travelling on the aircraft helped during the incident. These details have not been fully confirmed by flydubai or Saudi investigators.

There have also been conflicting accounts over which pilot initiated the attack. Consequently, the identities of the alleged attacker and victim, as well as the precise sequence of events inside the cockpit, should be treated as preliminary pending the official investigation.

Aircraft experienced sharp descent

Flight-tracking data showed a dramatic change in the aircraft’s altitude during the incident. Reports based on Flightradar24 data indicated that the Boeing 737 descended by roughly 17,000 feet, from around 34,000 feet to approximately 16,600 feet, in a little over two minutes before stabilising.

The sudden descent, combined with the emergency transponder signals and the apparent cockpit struggle, contributed to the initial perception that the aircraft could have been under hostile control.

The flight eventually entered the Tabuk area and landed safely. Saudi authorities said both pilots were taken to hospital, while passengers were assisted at the airport.

Israel subsequently says it was not a hijacking

The initial security response was complicated by the fact that the aircraft had transmitted the 7500 code, which is internationally used to indicate unlawful interference.

However, an Israeli Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson later told Reuters that the incident was not believed to have been a hijacking, describing it instead as a “different incident”. At the same time, Israeli security officials were examining whether the cockpit confrontation could have been an intentional act of terrorism.

The distinction is significant: while the aircraft briefly transmitted the international hijacking code, available reporting does not establish that control of the aircraft was actually seized by an outside hijacker. The central question for investigators is therefore what prompted the cockpit confrontation and whether the actions of either pilot were deliberate attempts to take control of or deliberately crash the aircraft.

Saudi Arabia becomes unexpected diversion point

The incident also had an unusual regional dimension because the aircraft carrying passengers bound for Israel landed in Saudi Arabia, a country that does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

The flight’s route took it over or near Jordanian and Saudi airspace, and the emergency forced the aircraft to divert to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities subsequently secured the aircraft and began dealing with the passengers and crew.

The episode occurred against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in the region and increased air-traffic sensitivity on routes linking Israel with Gulf states.

Investigation under way

Flydubai has said its teams are working with the relevant authorities and that further information will be released as confirmed details become available. Saudi authorities are investigating the incident, while Israeli officials are also examining the circumstances because the aircraft was carrying passengers bound for Israel and briefly transmitted the 7500 unlawful-interference code.

The immediate outcome was that FZ1073 landed safely and its passengers survived, despite the serious cockpit incident, the emergency signals and the aircraft’s abrupt descent.

For now, the most firmly established sequence is that a flydubai Boeing 737 Max 8 flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv experienced a serious cockpit incident, transmitted emergency codes including 7700 and 7500, diverted to Tabuk and landed safely, with both pilots injured and hospitalised. Claims that the incident constituted an attempted hijacking or terror attack remain matters for the ongoing investigation rather than established facts.
