Flydubai FZ1073: Indian captain injured in cockpit attack as passengers and crew prevent catastrophe

Dubai, Sep 30. A potentially catastrophic incident unfolded aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 when a violent confrontation erupted in the cockpit and one pilot was stabbed.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 subsequently made a sharp descent, transmitted emergency signals and diverted to Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely with all passengers and crew accounted for.

The pilot who was injured has been identified in Indian and international media reports as Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national and the pilot in command.

Flight FZ1073 departed Dubai International Airport at about 03:05 UTC for Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv. The aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, climbed to approximately 34,000 feet before the emergency began.

According to flight-tracking data analysed by Flightradar24, the aircraft began experiencing dramatic altitude fluctuations at around 05:21 UTC. At one point, it dropped approximately 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, falling from about 30,875 feet to 16,750 feet. The aircraft subsequently climbed and descended again before settling at a lower altitude.

The flight transmitted 7700, the internationally recognised transponder code for a general emergency, and subsequently 7500, the code indicating unlawful interference or a hijacking-type situation. Israeli authorities consequently treated the event as a potentially serious security threat and scrambled fighter aircraft.

The flight transmitted 7700, the internationally recognised transponder code for a general emergency, and subsequently 7500, the code indicating unlawful interference or a hijacking-type situation. Israeli authorities consequently treated the event as a potentially serious security threat and scrambled fighter aircraft.

Saudi authorities confirmed that both the captain and first officer were injured and were taken to hospital after the aircraft landed at Tabuk.

Israeli officials and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu subsequently gave a much more detailed account, saying that the first officer allegedly stabbed the captain and then apparently attempted to bring down the aircraft. Reuters reported that an Israeli official identified the co-pilot as an Omani national, although the circumstances and motive remained under investigation.

Captain Smit Machchhar, according to reports, was the pilot in command and had been a flydubai Boeing 737 captain since June 2022. Before joining flydubai, he reportedly spent about 11 years with SpiceJet in India, including service as a senior commander and line-training captain. His professional profile lists substantial experience on Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX aircraft.

Machchhar was reportedly attacked and stabbed during the cockpit confrontation. Despite the attack, the cockpit door was subsequently opened, allowing passengers and other crew members to intervene.

Reports from passengers and Israeli officials indicate that the injured captain’s actions and the opening of the cockpit door were crucial moments in preventing the situation from becoming worse. A Netanyahu spokesman told Reuters that the wounded pilot, lying on the cockpit floor, had opened the cockpit-door release.

One of the most extraordinary aspects of the incident was the intervention of passengers.

As the aircraft began its steep descent and passengers realised that something was seriously wrong, several people moved towards the cockpit. According to accounts cited by Reuters, passengers and a crew member entered the cockpit and overpowered the pilot who was allegedly attempting to interfere with the aircraft’s systems.

Passenger accounts published by Israeli media described people breaking into the cockpit after observing the aircraft diving and behaving abnormally. Some passengers reportedly physically restrained the assailant.

Video footage subsequently circulated showing blood on the injured captain and passengers guarding him. Another passenger was seen with a head wound. Passengers could also be heard telling the injured pilot that he had saved the aircraft.

Prime Minister Netanyahu later spoke to one of the passengers who had entered the cockpit. He said the passenger described how the aircraft had entered a dive and how people had gone into the cockpit and fought the pilot. Netanyahu publicly credited those passengers and crew members with preventing a major disaster.

Perhaps the most important factor in the eventual safe landing was that additional qualified pilots were reportedly travelling aboard the aircraft.

Reuters reported that a second set of pilots who were on the aircraft and were due to replace the original crew ultimately landed the aircraft safely. Other reports similarly said that two off-duty/relief pilots travelling as passengers helped regain control after the cockpit confrontation.

With the situation stabilised, FZ1073 was diverted away from its original destination and headed towards Tabuk’s Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport.

The Saudi airport received the distress call and prepared for the emergency landing. The aircraft landed safely at approximately 09:45 local time, according to reports citing airport authorities. Both pilots were transported to hospital for treatment.

Flydubai subsequently confirmed that the aircraft had been “successfully secured by on-duty flydubai crew travelling on the flight”, who diverted and landed it safely at Tabuk. The airline said all passengers and crew were safe and accounted for.

What makes FZ1073 particularly extraordinary is the combination of circumstances: a violent cockpit confrontation, the stabbing of a pilot, an aircraft that suddenly lost more than 14,000 feet in less than half a minute, emergency transponder codes, the possibility of unlawful interference, and a diversion into the territory of a country that was not the aircraft’s intended destination.

Captain Smit Machchhar’s reported actions, the intervention of passengers and crew, and the presence of additional trained pilots aboard the aircraft together appear to have prevented what could have become a major aviation disaster. The full sequence – and particularly the motive and precise actions of each person in the cockpit – will depend on the formal investigation rather than the preliminary accounts now emerging.
