KSSL, AM General forge partnership for next-generation mobile artillery systems

Paris, June 19. Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL), the defence arm of Bharat Forge Ltd, has entered into a strategic partnership with US-based military vehicle manufacturer AM General to jointly develop and market next-generation mounted artillery platforms for global customers.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Eurosatory defence exhibition and aims to address the growing demand among modern armed forces for highly mobile, lightweight and rugged artillery systems capable of operating in diverse terrains and weather conditions.

Under the partnership, the two companies will offer compact and survivable mounted gun systems designed to provide enhanced mobility and firepower. The collaboration is expected to target export markets and support allied nations seeking advanced 155 mm artillery capabilities.

As part of the tie-up, AM General has submitted a proposal to participate in the US Army’s Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) programme. The proposal envisages the development and delivery of a 155 mm artillery system based on KSSL’s combat-ready Mounted Artillery Gun (MArG) platform. Subject to selection by the US Army, deliveries are expected to begin in 2027.

The MArG system combines a 52-calibre 155 mm cannon with KSSL’s patented Soft Recoil Technology (SRT), which significantly reduces recoil forces compared with conventional artillery systems. The technology enables the use of lighter vehicles and turrets while reducing stress on the weapon platform over its service life.

Designed for high mobility, the system features a purpose-built powerpack and suspension and is equipped with an automated load-assist mechanism and an advanced all-weather fire control suite capable of both direct and indirect fire missions. It can engage targets at ranges exceeding 40 km using standard high-explosive ammunition and carries more than 20 projectiles and propellant charges onboard.

Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director of Bharat Forge, said the partnership reflects confidence in the company’s artillery technologies and its ability to deliver combat-proven solutions suited to contemporary battlefield requirements.

AM General President and Chief Executive Officer John Chadbourne said the collaboration demonstrates the two companies’ commitment to supporting allied forces and enhancing battlefield capabilities through the integration of KSSL’s soft recoil technology with advanced artillery platforms.

KSSL said the partnership aligns with its broader objective of developing globally competitive defence systems designed and manufactured in India for both domestic and international markets.
